|Memorise: “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled” (Matt 5:6)
Read: Matthew 20:20-23
|In Matthew 5:3, Jesus said the poor in spirit are in the category of the blessed. The poor in spirit are those who are never satisfied with their spiritual state. They are always hungry for more of God – His love, the fruit of His Spirit and gifts of the Spirit. Their delight is in Christ. Luke 11:9-10 says if you seek, you will find. One major characteristic of the poor in spirit is that they have a large capacity to fill. They are insatiable in their quest for Heavenly things, and would not rest until they are filled. Jesus says in Matthew 5:6, “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled”. Hunger plays a major role in the distribution of Heavenly blessings. Some people are okay with a cup of tea in the morning.
Some do not even take breakfast because they are not hungry. When it comes to lunch or supper, some adults do not eat more than an eight-year old. God cannot fill you beyond your capacity or container. I
you think you are okay the way you are, you will never move an inch beyond that point. If you do not hunger to know more about God, you will be limited to the little you already know about Him.
When James and John requested for top Heavenly positions through their mother who was one of Jesus’ ministry helpers, they were hunger-driven. The Lord saw it and corrected what was out of order and showed them how to be great. They took His path and entered into greatness. The stronghold of the flesh over their temperaments was broken. The lions became lambs. And they not only became part of the inner circle of Jesus, John became His closest associate.
To know God, you must be poor in spirit. You must hunger for more of Him until He fills you up completely. The extent you can climb the spiritual ladder does not depend on how many top pastors you know, but on how hungry you are for Heavenly things. James and John were not hungry for earthly positions but heavenly ones.
Those who would seat on Heavenly thrones are those who hungered for more of God and His Kingdom during their life time. What are you hungry for? Is it for the earthly bread or the Heavenly bread? Your hunger will determine your growth level and pace. Ask God to give you real hunger for eternal things.
|Ask for hunger pangs for the things of God. Pray against the spirit of accident on our roads.
